ABOUT RAINBOW HOOPS

Rainbow Hoops Women's Basketball League is meant to create a lesbian-positive environment and it allows players of all levels of experience to enjoy the game of basketball. Keeping league play a positive experience for everyone is why the league is so successful. Our hope is to make all players feel welcomed while promoting equity, fair play, and most all…..Fun!

The league began in 1996 as a pick up game on a word of mouth basis and quickly grew to 4 teams. Now with 7 teams per season, we place over 112 women each year on teams designed to be competitive against one another, and balance experienced and less experienced players to work in tandem. From ex-university players to absolute novices, we encourage all women to participate, learn the game or hone their skills.

At Rainbow Hoops, you can come out with friends, participate in social events, sign up for team rep responsibilities, help run our clinics, hang out and watch, meet other ballers... the opportunities for your next Saturday night are endless.

In a city the size of Toronto, we are happy that Rainbow Hoops has been able to grow and accommodate women from all over Metro, becoming a part of the fabric of the gay community beyond simply providing an outlet for sport.

Philosophy of the league

  • There can be good competition alongside good sportswomen-like behaviour;
  • People join RH to meet people, have fun, play basketball (or learn) and to get some exercise. We hope to continue to provide a basketball league where these different reasons and different skills coexist, and where respect is given to all players and officials.
